Safety, Privacy, and Responsible Use of Copilot

Lesson 4: Your Copilot Responsible-Use Routine

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Run a four-step responsible-use routine for Copilot.
  • Choose the right Copilot account for the data involved.
  • Recognize oversharing risks when Copilot can reach work files and email.

Lesson Content

The routine:

  1. Strip: remove names, numbers, and private details when not needed.
  2. Choose the account: personal Copilot for personal tasks; your organization's approved Copilot for work data. Look for enterprise protection indicators on work accounts.
  3. Check: match verification to the stakes; open sources and cited files.
  4. Decide: a person approves anything consequential before it is sent or shared.

A Microsoft 365 risk to know: oversharing. Microsoft 365 Copilot can surface any content you already have permission to see. If files were shared too broadly in your organization (for example, a salary spreadsheet in a widely shared folder), Copilot may find them. If Copilot shows you something you should not see, stop, do not share it, and report it to your administrator.
