Safety, Privacy, and Responsible Use of Claude

Lesson 4: Your Claude Responsible-Use Routine

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Combine privacy, human judgment, and tool choice into one repeatable routine.
  • Review Claude's data, memory, and history settings in their own account.
  • Practice the routine on a realistic task and record what it caught.

Lesson Content

The responsible-use routine has four short steps you can run in under a minute:

  1. Strip: remove names, numbers, health, legal, and confidential business details. Use placeholders.
  2. Scope: choose the right place: plain chat, a Project with only the files it needs, or an approved work account for work data.
  3. Check: match verification to the stakes, and apply the consequential decision test.
  4. Decide: a person approves anything with real consequences.

Know your settings. In your Claude account, find the settings for memory (what Claude keeps between chats), chat history, and data use for model improvement. Review what memory has saved and remove anything private or outdated. Work and team accounts may be managed by an administrator with different rules. Settings and policies change, so confirm on Anthropic's current privacy and help pages.
