Using Templates Effectively

Lesson 2: Customizing Templates for Brand and Content Fit

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Replace placeholder text with actual script content effectively
  • Apply brand colors and typography to template visual elements
  • Add brand logos and configured visual identity elements
  • Know which template elements to customize vs. leave as-is

Lesson Content

Replacing placeholder content.

Templates include placeholder text and example visual elements demonstrating the template's structure. Replace all placeholder text with actual script content – leaving default placeholder text in a generated video is a common mistake that immediately signals the output as a low-effort template use.

Applying brand colors and typography.

Most templates allow customizing colors for text overlays, background elements, and graphic accents. Replacing template default colors with brand palette colors, and using brand-specified typography where font selection is available, moves the output from "looks like a template" to "looks like on-brand content."

Adding brand logos and identity elements.

Logo placement on appropriate scenes – typically the opening, closing, and potentially throughout – applies consistent brand marking. If a template has a placeholder logo position, replace it with the actual brand mark. Verify logo file format requirements for the platform.

What to leave as-is.

Not everything needs changing – a template's timing structure (scene durations, transition timing) and layout proportions that work well for the content type should typically be left as-is rather than modified unnecessarily. Focus customization on brand and content elements, not the structural timing mechanics that the template has been designed to get right.
