Script Writing and Voice Control

Lesson 2: Voice Selection and Settings

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Select a voice appropriate for the content's tone and audience
  • Configure available voice settings for delivery quality
  • Match voice character to avatar selection for coherent output
  • Test voice settings before committing to full generation

Lesson Content

Voice selection considerations.

HeyGen offers a library of available voices (and, on some plans, the ability to use a custom cloned voice). Voice selection should consider: gender and demographic fit for the content's context, vocal tone (formal/authoritative vs. warm/conversational vs. energetic), and language/accent if the content targets a specific region. Verify the current voice library and filter options at heygen.com.

Voice settings available.

Available settings typically include speed (pacing) and pitch adjustments. Adjusting speed can address AI delivery that feels rushed or uncomfortably slow for the content type – a slower pace often benefits complex instructional content, while a slightly faster pace may suit upbeat marketing content. Verify current specific settings at heygen.com.

Matching voice to avatar.

For coherent output, the voice character should match the avatar selection – a formal avatar paired with a casual, energetic voice creates tonal mismatch that can undermine the video's credibility. Both elements should point in the same directional tone.

Testing voice settings.

Generate a short test clip (a few sentences from the actual script) with the selected voice and settings before generating the full video. This surfaces pacing, tone, or quality issues before investing generation time in a full-length output.
