Lesson 3: Magic Expand – Extending Image Canvas
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Apply Magic Expand to extend an image's canvas dimensions
- Select expansion direction for specific design needs
- Evaluate Magic Expand results for quality and consistency
- Use Magic Expand for format adaptation and design flexibility
Lesson Content
What Magic Expand does.
Magic Expand extends an image's canvas by generating new content that continues the existing image beyond its original boundaries – adding more sky to a landscape, extending a background to fill a wider format, or adding environmental context to a tightly cropped subject. The generated extension is AI-created content that attempts to visually match the original image's style, lighting, and content.
Selecting expansion direction.
Magic Expand typically allows specifying the direction of expansion: left, right, up, down, or all sides. Choose the direction based on the design need: expanding upward for more sky in a landscape; expanding laterally for a wider format; expanding all sides to add breathing room around a subject. Specify the expansion amount by adjusting the canvas size or expansion dimensions.
Evaluating Magic Expand quality.
Magic Expand quality varies by image type and expansion direction: images with consistent, simple backgrounds (clear sky, solid color surfaces, simple textures) expand more cleanly than images with complex, pattern-specific backgrounds (brick, detailed vegetation, specific environments). Review expanded areas for visual discontinuity at the boundary between the original image and the generated extension.
Design use cases for Magic Expand.
Practical uses: adapting a portrait-format photo for a landscape-format design layout (expand laterally to fill the wider format); adding negative space around a subject for text placement (expand in the direction where text will appear); and correcting cropped compositions (expand to recover visual context that was cropped out).
