Lesson Content
What Magic Switch does.
Magic Switch adapts an existing Canva design for a different format – converting an Instagram square post to a Story format, adapting a presentation to a document, or reformatting a social media graphic for a different platform's dimensions. The AI automatically repositions and rescales design elements to fit the new format dimensions, saving the time of manually adapting layouts.
Using Magic Switch.
Magic Switch is accessed from within a Canva design – typically through a resize or adapt option in the design toolbar or menu. Select the target format or enter target dimensions, and Magic Switch generates an adapted version of the design in the new format. The adapted design can be edited independently of the original – both formats are maintained as separate designs.
Verifying switched designs.
Magic Switch's automatic layout adaptation is not always perfect – certain design element repositions may need manual adjustment. Always verify: text elements are fully visible and not clipped; key visual elements are in the intended position; hierarchy is preserved in the new format; and the overall design reads as intended in the new dimensions. Review the switched design carefully rather than assuming the automatic adaptation is final-quality.
Planning for Magic Switch efficiency.
Design the primary format version with Magic Switch in mind: avoid design elements that are critically dependent on specific absolute positions that won't translate to different dimensions; use clear visual hierarchy that can be maintained across format changes; and design text areas with sufficient margin for potential layout shifts. A primary design that anticipates format adaptation requires less post-switch editing.
