Getting Started with Canva AI Features

Lesson 3: Understanding AI Credit Usage in Canva

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Understand which Canva AI operations consume credits
  • Check current credit balance within the Canva interface
  • Plan AI feature use to stay within monthly credit limits
  • Understand the difference between free and paid plan credit allocations

Lesson Content

Which operations consume AI credits.

Canva AI credit consumption varies by operation type: AI image generation (Text to Image) typically consumes credits per generation; Magic Write text generation may consume credits depending on plan; other AI editing features (Background Remover, Magic Eraser) may or may not consume credits depending on the plan and current feature structure. Verify current credit consumption by feature at canva.com – the credit system evolves with platform updates.

Checking credit balance.

Credit balance is typically visible in the account settings or within the AI features interface – check the current credit display location in the active Canva version. Monitoring credits before starting a high-volume AI generation session prevents unexpected mid-session credit exhaustion.

Planning AI production within credit limits.

For high-volume AI image generation projects: estimate the number of generations needed before starting, verify credit balance against the estimate, and plan the session to stay within available credits. For text generation: Magic Write is typically less credit-intensive than image generation – plan text-heavy projects differently from image-generation-heavy projects.

Free vs. paid plan credit differences.

Free plan users typically receive a limited monthly AI credit allocation while paid plans (Pro, Teams) receive substantially larger allocations. If AI features are central to a production workflow, the free tier credit allocation may be insufficient – evaluate whether a paid plan is appropriate for the intended usage volume.
