Lesson Content

Canva AI feature categories.

Canva's AI features fall into several functional categories: (1) Image generation – Text to Image, AI-generated background images; (2) Photo and image editing – Background Remover, Magic Eraser, Magic Edit, Magic Expand; (3) Text and writing assistance – Magic Write for AI text generation, AI-powered translation; (4) Design layout and automation – Magic Design for template generation from prompts, Magic Switch for format adaptation; (5) Presentation and video – AI-assisted slide generation, video editing support; (6) Brand tools – Brand Voice for consistent AI writing.

How AI features are accessed in Canva.

Canva's AI features are integrated throughout the design environment – accessed through: the Apps panel (Text to Image and other dedicated AI apps), right-click context menus on selected elements (Magic Edit, Background Remover), the toolbar (Magic Write in text boxes), and dedicated creation flows (Magic Design from the homepage). Understanding where each tool type is accessed prevents frustration from searching for features in the wrong part of the interface.

Plan availability of AI features.

Not all AI features are available on all Canva plans – some are exclusive to Canva Pro or Teams. The free plan includes access to some AI features with usage limits; paid plans provide broader access and higher usage limits. Verify current feature availability by plan at canva.com – this changes as Canva updates its plan structure and AI feature set.

AI as integrated, not separate.

Canva's approach integrates AI into existing design workflows rather than offering AI as a separate tool – the same design workspace is used with and without AI features. This means AI features enhance and accelerate existing design work rather than requiring a separate AI-specific workflow.
