Reference Images and Consistent Output
Lesson 3: Managing Consistency Across Large Projects
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Build a reference image system for large project consistency
- Maintain systematic prompt documentation for large series
- Establish a review process for large-volume AI generation
- Document generation systems for team use and future projects
Lesson Content
Building a reference image system.
A reference image system for large projects: establish a designated reference folder containing approved style references and composition references for the project; define which reference images are mandatory (applied to every generation in the project) vs. optional (applied for specific generation types); and name references clearly by their intended function ("brand-style-reference.jpg," "hero-composition-reference.jpg"). A systematic reference library prevents inconsistent reference selection across team members and generation sessions.
Maintaining prompt documentation.
Large-series prompt documentation: record the core prompt formula (fixed elements); record variations generated per image (the variable element for each image in the series); record generation parameters applied (aspect ratio, content type, style settings); and record which references were applied per generation. This documentation enables: reproducing a specific result if needed; identifying which prompt elements correlate with the best results; and onboarding team members to the established system without rebuilding the formula.
Review processes for large-volume generation.
For large-volume generation (50+ images): batch review (generate in sets of 10-20, review the full set for consistency before proceeding); staged selection (first pass – eliminate clear failures; second pass – compare shortlist for series consistency; final pass – select final images against the complete series set); and quality documentation (note common failure patterns for prompt refinement). Staged review prevents investing generation capacity in a direction that's producing systematically poor results.
Documenting generation systems for future use.
A complete project generation system document includes: the prompt formula and its components; reference images with descriptions of their function; generation parameters and platform settings; review criteria and selection standards; and any prompt adjustments made during production and why. This document enables consistent future use by the same team and efficient handoff if another team member needs to extend the series.
