Generative Fill and Generative Expand

Lesson 3: Generative Expand – Extending Image Canvas

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Apply Generative Expand to extend image canvas in Photoshop
  • Select expansion direction appropriate for the design need
  • Evaluate Generative Expand quality for visual continuity
  • Use Generative Expand for format adaptation

Lesson Content

How Generative Expand works.

Generative Expand extends an image's canvas by generating AI content that continues the existing image beyond its original boundaries. In Photoshop, canvas extension with Generative Expand is accessed by expanding the canvas (using Canvas Size or the Crop tool to set a larger canvas with the image positioned within it), selecting the empty canvas area, and applying Generative Fill with an empty prompt – the AI generates content that continues the image into the empty area. The Firefly web interface may also offer direct Generative Expand functionality.

Selecting expansion direction.

Expansion direction depends on the design requirement: expand upward for images that need more sky or vertical context above the subject; expand laterally for adapting portrait-format images to landscape format (or vice versa); expand all edges to add compositional breathing room around a tightly cropped subject. The amount of expansion is set by the canvas size adjustment before the Generative Fill is applied.

Evaluating Generative Expand quality.

Quality evaluation: visual continuity at the boundary between the original image and the generated expansion (is the transition seamless, or is there a visible seam or discontinuity?); environmental consistency (does the generated expansion match the lighting, color, and environmental character of the original?); and subject coherence if the subject extends into the expansion area (does the subject's expanded elements match the original body proportions and appearance?).

Generative Expand for format adaptation.

A key practical use is format adaptation: adapting a portrait-format image for a landscape-format design layout, or a square image for a vertical mobile format. Generative Expand generates the additional canvas content required for the new format, preserving the original composition while extending the image to fill the required frame. This is substantially faster than reshooting for the required format or attempting to stretch or crop the original.
