Voice Rights, Consent, and Ethical Use
Lesson 2: Disclosure Considerations for AI-Generated Voice Content
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Identify situations warranting disclosure of AI-generated voice content
- Apply appropriate disclosure language and placement
- Recognize platform-specific and emerging regulatory disclosure requirements
- Balance disclosure transparency with practical content design
Lesson Content
When disclosure matters.
Disclosure that voice content is AI-generated is particularly important when: the content could otherwise be reasonably mistaken for a real recording of an actual person speaking, the content is used in contexts where authenticity matters to the audience's trust or decision-making (testimonials, news-adjacent content), or when required by platform policy or applicable regulation.
Disclosure language and placement.
Clear, simple disclosure ("This voice was generated using AI" or similar) placed where the audience will reasonably encounter it (in video descriptions, at the start of audio content, in accompanying text) is more effective than disclosure buried in fine print or terms that audiences are unlikely to actually read.
Platform-specific and regulatory considerations.
Some platforms (social media, advertising networks) have specific disclosure requirements for AI-generated content, and regulatory requirements in this area are actively evolving across jurisdictions. Verify current requirements for the specific platforms and jurisdictions relevant to the content's distribution, as this is an actively developing area.
Balancing transparency with content design.
Disclosure does not need to undermine creative content – a brief, clear notice can coexist with engaging content design. The goal is ensuring the audience has the information needed to appropriately contextualize what they're hearing, not eliminating the use of AI voice technology in creative work.
