Voice Cloning – Creating a Custom Voice

Lesson 3: Creating and Validating a Cloned Voice

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Initiate a voice cloning process with prepared audio
  • Evaluate a cloned voice's accuracy and quality
  • Identify common cloning quality issues
  • Decide whether to proceed to use or retrain with additional audio

Lesson Content

Initiating the cloning process.

Upload the prepared training audio and complete any required consent verification steps, then initiate the cloning/training process. Verify the current cloning interface and process at elevenlabs.io, as the specific steps and available options vary by cloning tier and platform updates.

Evaluating clone quality.

After cloning completes, generate several test clips with varied script content using the new clone and evaluate: does the voice sound recognizably like the source speaker, does it handle a range of sentence types and emotional registers naturally, and are there any obvious artifacts or inconsistencies compared to the source voice?

Common quality issues.

Issues might include: the clone sounding generically similar but not precisely matching the source voice's distinctive characteristics, inconsistent quality across different types of script content, or artifacts that weren't present in the clean source training audio.

Deciding on retraining.

If evaluation reveals quality issues, consider whether better or more training audio (cleaner recording, more variety, longer duration for tiers that support it) would likely resolve the specific issues observed, and retrain accordingly. If the clone is reasonably accurate and handles the intended use case's range of content well, proceed to production use.
