Voice Cloning – Creating a Custom Voice
Lesson 2: Preparing Training Audio for Cloning
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Identify recording quality requirements for training audio
- Apply appropriate duration guidelines for cloning training data
- Include appropriate content variety in training audio
- Avoid common training audio preparation mistakes
Lesson Content
Recording quality requirements.
Clean, high-quality source audio – minimal background noise, consistent recording level, no significant audio artifacts or compression issues – produces a more accurate, higher-quality clone. Lower-quality source audio (background noise, inconsistent levels) typically produces a lower-fidelity clone reproducing those quality issues.
Duration guidelines.
Voice cloning quality requirements vary by platform and cloning tier (e.g., a quick "instant" clone vs. a more thorough "professional" clone option, where available). Verify ElevenLabs' current duration recommendations for the specific cloning tier being used, as these vary and are actively refined by the platform.
Content variety in training audio.
Training audio capturing some natural variation – different sentence structures, varying emotional tone within natural range, if available – typically produces a more flexible, naturally-generalizing clone than audio that is uniformly flat or monotonous throughout.
Common preparation mistakes.
Using audio with background music or noise, using audio with inconsistent recording quality across different source clips combined together, and using too little total audio for higher-fidelity cloning tiers requiring more substantial training data.
