Lesson 1: What Voice Cloning Is and Consent Requirements
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Explain what voice cloning does at a conceptual level
- Articulate the consent requirement for cloning any voice
- Identify the platform's verification mechanisms for consent
- Recognize misuse risks associated with voice cloning
Lesson Content
What voice cloning does.
Voice cloning trains a model on sample audio of a specific voice, producing a synthetic voice that can generate new speech in that voice's characteristic sound, for text the original speaker never actually said. This is a powerful capability with corresponding responsibility.
The consent requirement.
Cloning a voice requires the explicit consent of the person whose voice is being cloned. This applies whether cloning your own voice (a content creator's own voice for their own use, which is straightforward) or cloning someone else's voice (which requires their explicit, documented consent – a significantly higher bar). Platforms including ElevenLabs typically have verification mechanisms and policies specifically addressing this.
Platform verification mechanisms.
Many platforms require some form of verification before allowing voice cloning (e.g., audio consent statement recording, identity verification for professional voice cloning features) specifically to deter unauthorized cloning. Verify ElevenLabs' current verification requirements and process at elevenlabs.io, as these are actively maintained and updated as platforms respond to misuse risks.
Misuse risks.
Unauthorized voice cloning enables impersonation, fraud (including voice-based social engineering scams), and non-consensual synthetic media – serious harms that platform policies and increasingly, legal frameworks, are designed to prevent. Understanding these risks underscores why consent is not merely a platform formality but a substantive ethical and legal requirement.
