ElevenLabs Foundations – Your First AI Voice
Lesson 3: Common Beginner Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Identify voice/content mismatch as a common early mistake
- Recognize the impact of unformatted text input on output quality
- Set realistic expectations for first-attempt results
- Apply a basic troubleshooting process for disappointing results
Lesson Content
Voice/content mismatch.
Selecting a voice without considering its match to content tone (an overly energetic voice for somber content, a very formal voice for casual social content) produces a result that, while technically clean, doesn't fit the actual use case. Voice selection should be a deliberate match to content tone, not an arbitrary or default choice.
Unformatted text input.
Pasting a script with minimal or inconsistent punctuation produces unnatural pacing – a common beginner mistake is treating the text input as a simple data field rather than recognizing that its formatting directly shapes delivery quality.
Realistic first-attempt expectations.
Like other AI generation tools, achieving a polished final result is often iterative – minor pacing, emphasis, or pronunciation adjustments across a few attempts is normal, not a sign of doing something wrong.
Basic troubleshooting.
When a result disappoints: check if the voice choice actually matches the content's tone, review and improve text punctuation/formatting, and isolate one variable to change per regeneration attempt rather than changing several elements simultaneously.
