ElevenLabs Foundations – Your First AI Voice
Lesson 2: Generating a First Voice Clip
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Select an appropriate voice for a given use case
- Input and format text for generation
- Generate and review a first voice clip
- Assess whether a result is ready to use or needs refinement
Lesson Content
Selecting a voice.
The voice library typically includes a range of voices varying by gender, accent, age, and tone characteristics (warm, authoritative, energetic). Choose a voice matching the intended use case – a calm, warm voice for a meditation app differs meaningfully from an energetic, upbeat voice for an ad.
Inputting and formatting text.
Enter the script text to be voiced. Punctuation affects pacing – periods create pauses, commas create shorter pauses – so format the input script with intentional punctuation to guide natural-sounding delivery, not just for grammatical correctness.
Generating and reviewing.
Generate the clip and listen critically: does the pacing sound natural, is the emphasis appropriate for the content's meaning, and does the overall tone match the intended use? First attempts are a starting point, similar to other AI generation tools – refinement techniques are covered in the next course.
Assessing readiness.
A clip is ready when pacing, tone, and any pronunciation are correct for the intended use. A clip needing refinement might have pacing or emphasis issues (addressed in the next course); a clip needing a full restart usually has a fundamentally mismatched voice choice for the content.
