Lesson Content
Grok's specific prose patterns.
Grok's direct style produces different AI markers than more hedged tools, but it still has recognizable patterns:
- Top-heavy structure (every section leads with conclusion, every paragraph with topic sentence – correct, but visibly formulaic)
- Punchy but generic: direct language that does not sound personal
- Clipped transitions: "Here's the key point." / "Bottom line:" / "In short:"
- Confident phrasing that sounds like leadership communication rather than your specific voice
These patterns are more subtle than typical AI filler – they feel direct and professional, but still do not sound like you specifically.
The personal voice review with Grok.
"Identify the markers of AI-generated prose in this text: (1) phrases that sound like efficient AI rather than a specific person's voice, (2) any transitions that exist for structure rather than meaning, (3) anything that sounds like a template being filled rather than a genuine communication, (4) where the directness tips into bluntness that would feel aggressive to the actual reader."
Grok can identify its own markers – use it.
The read-aloud test.
Read the piece aloud. Places where you hesitate, feel like it is not quite you, or notice the rhythm is off – those are the places to edit. This test reveals what pattern analysis cannot: the difference between correct language and your authentic voice.
Editing for authentic directness.
After AI-assisted drafting, the goal is not to make the piece less direct – it is to make the directness sound like you, not like an algorithm:
- Replace formulaic markers ("Bottom line:") with the actual content stated directly
- Add specific details only you would know
- Change phrases that sound like they were written by a confident AI rather than a specific person
- Verify all accuracy claims personally
The pre-submission checklist.
For any professionally important Grok-assisted piece:
- Every factual claim has been personally verified
- Nothing has been overstated, invented, or inaccurately represented
- The piece sounds like you – passed the read-aloud test
- No formulaic AI markers remain
- The opening earns continued reading
- The closing gives the reader a clear takeaway or action
- Where context requires disclosure of AI assistance, it is included
