Understanding How Grok Works
Lesson 2: Real-Time X Access and DeepSearch
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Explain what real-time X access provides and what it does not
- Understand what DeepSearch does and how it differs from standard queries
- Apply appropriate verification to X-integrated and DeepSearch output
- Know when to use DeepSearch vs. standard Grok queries
Lesson Content
What real-time X access actually provides.
Grok's real-time X integration allows it to:
- Access current posts and discussions on X about topics you ask about
- Identify trending topics and the range of public discussion around them
- Incorporate very recent information that has not yet been reflected in training data
- Provide social opinion research – what people are saying, not what is verified
It does NOT provide:
- Verified factual reporting
- Expert analysis from credentialed sources
- Content from outside the X platform
- Any guarantee that X posts it draws from are accurate
The social media information distinction.
X posts range from journalists breaking real news stories to individuals sharing unverified opinions to coordinated misinformation. Grok synthesizes across this full spectrum. The result is a representation of public X discourse – not a curated, verified news summary.
For social research ("what is public sentiment about this topic?") – genuinely valuable. For factual verification ("did this event actually happen, and what were the details?") – requires authoritative sources regardless of what X posts say.
What DeepSearch does.
DeepSearch is Grok's extended research mode – available at higher subscription tiers. When activated, it:
- Takes more time to complete (seconds to minutes rather than instant response)
- Searches across more sources, including web content beyond X
- Produces more comprehensive, multi-point responses
- Shows its sources and reasoning more explicitly
DeepSearch produces more thorough research, not more accurate research. Verify significant claims from DeepSearch output the same way as standard output.
When to use DeepSearch vs. standard queries.
Use standard Grok queries for:
- Quick questions you can verify yourself
- Brainstorming and creative work
- Writing assistance and drafting
- Personal productivity tasks
Use DeepSearch for:
- Research tasks that benefit from breadth
- Topics where you want multiple source perspectives
- Professional research where thoroughness matters
- Any task where you would otherwise need to run multiple separate searches
**Availability Note**: DeepSearch availability varies by subscription tier. Verify current feature availability at grok.com.
