Understanding How Grok Works

Lesson 4: Using Grok’s Modes Wisely – Think, DeepSearch, and Imagine

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Choose between standard chat, reasoning (Think) mode, and DeepSearch for a task.
  • Use Imagine for images responsibly.
  • Apply the right verification to each mode's output.

Lesson Content

Grok offers several ways to work (names and availability vary by plan; check xAI's current pages):

  • Standard chat: quick answers, drafting, brainstorming.
  • Reasoning (Think) mode: step-by-step reasoning for complex problems. Slower, better for multi-step logic. Some newer models reason by default.
  • DeepSearch: multi-step web and X research for current questions. Source quality varies; verify key claims.
  • Imagine (images and video): image generation and editing. Avoid real people's likenesses without consent, misleading images, and brand logos you do not own.
  • Voice: spoken conversation for practice and hands-free use.

Rule: use the lightest mode that meets the need, and verify according to stakes.
