Lesson Content
Why verification is non-negotiable.
Meta AI can produce confident-sounding incorrect information. It can state wrong facts, cite non-existent sources, misapply concepts, and generate plausible but inaccurate guidance. This is not a flaw unique to Meta AI – it is true of all current AI tools. The solution is not avoiding AI – it is developing reliable verification habits.
The four-tier verification framework.
Tier 1 – Low Stakes: Personal decisions with minimal consequences. Use Meta AI output directly after a personal review. Examples: ideas for a personal message to a friend, brainstorming a gift idea, quick personal research on a non-critical topic.
Tier 2 – Medium Stakes: Professional or personal decisions with moderate consequences. Spot-check important facts and claims against at least one independent source. Examples: background research for a professional conversation, drafting a work email, summarizing information for a presentation.
Tier 3 – High Stakes: Work products that will be seen by others, decisions with significant consequences. Verify all significant claims and facts against authoritative sources before use. Examples: published content, important decisions, client communications, anything with financial or legal implications.
Tier 4 – Non-Negotiable: Medical, legal, financial, and safety-critical decisions. Always consult qualified human professionals regardless of Meta AI's response quality. No AI tool substitutes for licensed professional expertise in these domains.
The five non-negotiable professional review categories.
For these five categories, Meta AI's output is a starting point only – never the final authority:
- Medical decisions: diagnosis, treatment, medication
- Legal matters: contracts, compliance, rights, litigation
- Financial decisions: investments, tax strategy, financial planning
- Safety-critical systems: engineering, infrastructure, safety specifications
- Mental health crisis: if you or someone you know is in crisis, contact qualified professionals or crisis resources (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 988 in the United States)
Applying verification to Meta AI specifically.
Meta AI in WhatsApp or Messenger conversations may feel casual – like texting a knowledgeable friend. This conversational feel can lower your verification guard. The tier still applies: a Tier 3 decision discussed in a WhatsApp conversation with Meta AI is still a Tier 3 decision.
