Crafting Effective Prompts for ChatGPT

Lesson 4: Build and Test a Personal Prompt Library

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Convert successful prompts into reusable templates with clear variables.
  • Test a prompt on several different inputs before trusting it.
  • Version and improve prompts based on what fails.

Lesson Content

A prompt that worked once is a lucky result. A prompt that works on five different inputs is a tool. This lesson turns your best prompts into a small, reliable library.

Step 1: Template it. Replace changing details with [variables]: [audience], [facts], [length]. Keep the fixed rules.

Step 2: Test it. Run the template on at least three different inputs, including one tricky case (missing information, unusual request, very long input). Note where it fails.

Step 3: Fix the failures. Add a rule for each failure: "If information is missing, ask me instead of guessing."

Step 4: Version it. Save the improved prompt as v2 with a one-line note about what changed. Keep the old version until the new one proves better.

Step 5: Store it where you work. A notes file, a document, a ChatGPT Project's instructions, or a Custom GPT for prompts you use daily (covered in the Mastering ChatGPT course).
