Understanding How Perplexity AI Works

Lesson 4: Choosing the Right Perplexity Mode for the Job

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Match research tasks to the right Perplexity mode or feature.
  • Use the lightest mode that meets the stakes and time available.
  • Recognize the extra care needed with agent-style browsing.

Lesson Content

Perplexity offers several ways to research (names and availability change; check the current help pages):

  • Quick search: fast, cited answers for simple questions.
  • Pro Search or deeper research modes: multi-step searching and longer reports for complex questions. Slower, and still need checking.
  • Spaces: organized collections of threads, files, and instructions for an ongoing topic.
  • Labs-style outputs: some plans can turn research into structured deliverables such as reports, spreadsheets, dashboards, or simple web pages.
  • Comet browser: Perplexity's browser can act on web pages for you (agent-style browsing). That is powerful but needs careful permission and review.

Rule of thumb: use the lightest mode that meets the stakes. A store-hours question needs quick search; a market overview may justify deep research; a recurring topic belongs in a Space.

Agent-style browsing caution: when a browser assistant can read pages and click for you, web content may try to manipulate it (for example, hidden instructions). Do not let it log in to sensitive accounts, make purchases, or send messages without your review.
