Safety, Privacy, and Responsible Use of Gemini

Lesson 4: Your Gemini Responsible-Use Routine

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Run a short responsible-use routine before and after using Gemini.
  • Configure Gemini activity settings and understand work-account differences.
  • Recognize when Gemini's access to Gmail, Drive, or Docs needs extra care.

Lesson Content

Gemini can connect to Google services such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Calendar. That makes it powerful and raises the stakes. A responsible-use routine has four steps:

  1. Strip: remove names, numbers, and private details when they are not needed; use placeholders.
  2. Scope: decide which Google services Gemini may use for this task. Only turn on what you need.
  3. Check: match verification to the stakes; open sources; apply the consequential decision test.
  4. Decide: a person approves anything with real consequences before it is sent or shared.

Settings to know: your Gemini activity settings (whether chats are saved, and for how long), connected app permissions, and, for work accounts, the rules your administrator sets. Policies change, so confirm details on Google's current help pages.

Connected data care: when Gemini searches your Gmail or Drive, its answer can include private information from those sources. Review answers before copying them into documents or messages meant for other people.
