Data, Logins, Security, and Privacy for No-Code Apps

Lesson 3: Collect Less, Protect More – Personal Data Basics

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Remove unnecessary personal data fields.
  • Write a retention and deletion plan.
  • Recognize data that needs professional advice.

Lesson Content

  • Collect less: every field you collect is something you must protect. Ask "will I use this in the next month?"
  • Payments: use a payment provider's hosted checkout (such as Stripe) so card numbers never touch your app.
  • Retention: decide how long to keep data and how to delete it (for example, "delete closed quote requests after 2 years").
  • Requests: plan how you would export or delete one person's data if asked.
  • Special data: health, children's, financial, or government ID data often carries legal duties; get qualified advice before collecting it.
  • Laws vary: privacy rules depend on where you and your users are (for example, GDPR in Europe or state privacy laws in the United States). This course is not legal advice.
