Data, Logins, Security, and Privacy for No-Code Apps
Lesson 2: Secrets, API Keys, and Passwords
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Identify secrets in an app project.
- Store secrets in the builder's secure settings.
- Respond to an exposed secret.
Lesson Content
A secret is anything that grants access: API keys, passwords, payment keys, email service tokens. Where they belong: the builder's secrets or environment settings, used only by the server side of the app.
How they leak: pasted into chat, written into code that runs in the browser, committed to a public repository, shared in screenshots.
If a secret leaks: rotate it (create a new key and delete the old one) immediately, check usage logs for misuse, and update the app.
