AI Privacy and Safety Basics
Lesson 4: Your Personal AI Safety Checklist
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Create a short personal checklist that covers privacy, accuracy, and scams.
- Recognize common AI-powered scam patterns such as voice clones and fake urgent messages.
- Use the checklist on a real low-risk task.
Lesson Content
A checklist turns good intentions into a habit. Pilots and nurses use checklists because even experts forget steps under pressure. Yours can be five lines long.
Before you ask:
- Did I remove names, numbers, addresses, and passwords?
- Is this tool approved for this kind of information?
Before you use the answer:
- Did I check every fact, number, and promise?
- Would I be comfortable if the person in the message read my prompt?
Scam awareness: AI also helps scammers. Watch for:
- Voice clones: a call that sounds like a family member asking for money urgently. Hang up and call back on a number you know. Some families agree on a code word.
- Fake urgency: messages that pressure you to act in minutes, click a link, or pay with gift cards.
- Too-perfect messages: polished emails that look official but come from an odd address.
The rule for all three: slow down and verify through a channel you already trust.
