Creative Workflows and Prompt Strategy

Lesson 3: Integrating Runway into Creative Pipelines

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Export and organize Runway-generated clips for use in video editing
  • Integrate generated clips with traditionally filmed footage
  • Deliver generated content for client review effectively
  • Document creative decisions for future reference

Lesson Content

Exporting and organizing generated clips.

Download generated clips from Runway in the available quality settings (verify current export options at runwayml.com) and organize them with clear file naming before importing into video editing software – consistent naming conventions (project name, scene/shot number, generation variant) prevent confusion when managing multiple clips across a complex project.

Integrating with traditionally filmed footage.

Generated AI footage and traditionally filmed footage can be combined in a video edit – but visual consistency between them requires attention to matching color grading, frame rate, aspect ratio, and overall visual style. AI-generated footage that looks dramatically different from practical footage in the same cut creates jarring transitions. Color grading AI-generated clips to match the practical footage's look is often necessary for seamless integration.

Client review and delivery.

When delivering AI-generated content to clients, provide context about what is generated (versus filmed), what modifications were made (inpainting, extension), and what the generation parameters were – giving clients informed basis for feedback rather than review disconnected from the production context. Some clients will have preferences about AI-generated content that should be clarified early in the relationship.

Documenting creative decisions.

Maintain a brief project document recording: which clips were AI-generated (vs. filmed), which model and prompt was used for each clip, what editing was applied (inpainting, color grade), and any generation parameters that produced particularly good results. This documentation supports handoff to other team members and future similar projects.
