Creative Workflows and Prompt Strategy
Lesson 2: Batch Generation and Creative Exploration
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Design a batch generation strategy for creative exploration
- Systematically vary prompt elements to explore a creative space
- Evaluate and select from batch results efficiently
- Use batch exploration before final production generation
Lesson Content
Why batch generation for exploration.
Creative exploration with AI generation benefits from many variations quickly – seeing multiple different interpretations of a concept before committing to one direction is more informative than single-generation decision-making. Batch generation (systematically generating multiple variations of a concept) efficiently surveys the creative space.
Systematic variation strategies.
Rather than random variation, systematic variation generates batches that vary one specific element at a time: a batch varying lighting approaches (golden hour, overcast, neon, studio lighting) across the same scene; a batch varying camera position (wide establishing, medium, close-up) across the same subject; a batch varying visual style (photorealistic, painterly, stylized) for the same content. Each batch provides clear comparative data about how that variable affects the output.
Evaluating batch results efficiently.
Rather than evaluating each clip in full detail, use a rapid-elimination approach: first pass to eliminate clearly unsuitable results (wrong direction, quality issues), second pass to evaluate the remaining candidates more closely for fit with the creative brief. This avoids spending equal evaluation time on both obviously unsuitable and potentially good results.
Batch exploration before production.
Use batch exploration at the concept and direction-finding stage, not throughout production. Once the creative direction is established from exploration, switch to production-mode generation using the refined prompt template – avoiding the credit waste of exploratory batch volume during what should be production-focused generation.
