Runway Model Selection – Choosing the Right Generation Model

Lesson 4: Model Selection Project – Your Runway Model Test Card

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Run a fair comparison of two or more Runway models on one real creative task.
  • Score results on quality, motion, prompt adherence, consistency, and credit cost.
  • Write a model test card that guides future projects.

Lesson Content

A model test card is a one-page record that answers: "For this kind of shot, which model should I use, and why?"

  1. Pick one real task: for example, a 5-second product hero shot or a slow landscape establishing shot.
  2. Freeze the inputs: the same prompt, the same starting image (if image-to-video), the same duration and aspect ratio.
  3. Generate at least two clips per model. One clip is luck; two shows a pattern.
  4. Score each clip 1-5 on visual quality, motion quality, prompt adherence, temporal consistency (does the object stay the same shape and color), and credits used.
  5. Decide: "Draft with model X, final with model Y," or "Model X for everything of this type."
  6. Date the card. When Runway releases a new model, rerun the same test.
