Inpainting, Masking, and Editing

Lesson 4: Editing Project – Fix a Clip Instead of Regenerating It

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Decide when to edit a clip versus regenerate it.
  • Apply a targeted edit to fix one problem.
  • Document the decision and the result.

Lesson Content

Regenerating a whole clip to fix one problem often breaks what was already good. Edit when:

  • 80 percent or more of the clip is right.
  • The problem is in one region or one property (sky color, an unwanted object, lighting).
  • The motion and composition are what you want.

Regenerate when the motion, framing, or subject is wrong.

Editing tools vary by plan and change often. At the time of writing, Runway offers region-based editing and the Aleph model, which edits footage from a text instruction (for example, "remove the parked car," "make it overcast," "change to dusk").
