Inpainting, Masking, and Editing
Lesson 2: Background Replacement and Masking Techniques
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Use subject isolation tools to separate foreground from background
- Replace a video background with generated or existing content
- Handle challenging edge cases (hair, transparent objects, complex boundaries)
- Evaluate background replacement quality
Lesson Content
Subject isolation for background replacement.
Background replacement starts with isolating the foreground subject from the background – using automatic subject detection, a manually drawn mask, or a combination. Automatic detection works well for clearly defined subjects with distinct contrast against the background; complex edges (hair, transparent elements, intricate details at subject boundaries) typically require more careful manual mask refinement.
Replacing the background.
Once the subject is isolated, the background area can be replaced via inpainting (generating new background content from a prompt) or replaced with an existing image or video background. The new background should be consistent with the subject's lighting – a subject lit from the left placed on a background with right-side lighting creates an implausible composition.
Challenging edge cases.
Hair is one of the most difficult subject boundary types for automated masking – fine strands that interleave with the background are rarely cleanly separable by automated tools alone. Transparent or translucent objects (glass, fabric) create similar challenges. For high-quality results with challenging edges, expect to invest time in manual mask refinement.
Evaluating replacement quality.
Check: edge quality at the subject-background boundary (no harsh cut edges, natural blending), lighting consistency between subject and new background, and temporal consistency (the background doesn't flicker or vary unnaturally across frames of the clip).
