Advanced Generation and Production with Pika
Lesson 2: Production-Grade Quality Evaluation
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Apply a systematic quality evaluation framework to generated clips
- Identify common advanced-level quality issues in AI video output
- Determine whether output meets commercial delivery requirements
- Communicate quality evaluation results to clients or collaborators
Lesson Content
Production quality evaluation dimensions.
Professional-grade quality evaluation covers: (1) Subject quality – is the primary subject rendered accurately and without distortion? (2) Motion quality – is motion natural, smooth, and free of temporal artifacts? (3) Background and environment – is the background rendered consistently without swimming or degradation? (4) Visual coherence – does the whole frame hold together as a unified image throughout the clip? (5) Aesthetic match – does the output match the intended aesthetic specification from the prompt?
Common advanced-level quality issues.
AI video generation has characteristic quality failure modes: subject distortion at clip edges or during motion; background "swimming" (background elements morphing or flickering during motion); temporal inconsistency (elements changing appearance frame-to-frame in ways they shouldn't); hand/finger rendering issues in human subjects; and fine detail degradation (text, small objects, fine textures) during motion.
Commercial delivery standards.
Commercial delivery requires that quality issues that would be acceptable in social media content may be unacceptable for broadcast, advertising, or premium platform delivery. Calibrate quality evaluation standards to the specific delivery context – a social media product clip has different quality thresholds than a broadcast commercial or a cinema exhibition piece.
Communicating quality issues.
When communicating quality evaluation results to clients or collaborators, specify quality issues precisely: "subject hand shows distortion in seconds 2-3 during the arm motion" rather than "it looks weird." Precise issue description enables focused iteration rather than general regeneration.
