Modify Region and Pikaffects
Lesson 1: Modify Region – Targeted Video Editing
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Select and define a region within a video frame for modification
- Write an effective modification prompt for the selected area
- Evaluate Modify Region results for consistency with the surrounding clip
- Use Modify Region efficiently for targeted fixes and creative changes
Lesson Content
What Modify Region does.
Modify Region allows selecting a specific area of a generated or uploaded video frame and directing an AI-driven change to that area – changing a visual element's appearance, removing something, or adding something to a defined region – without regenerating the entire video clip. This is particularly useful for targeted changes to a clip that is mostly correct, rather than regenerating everything to fix one area.
Selecting the region.
The region selection defines what area of the frame will be modified – drawn as a mask over the video. As with inpainting in other tools, a more precise region selection produces better results than an imprecise boundary that bleeds into areas that should remain unchanged.
Writing the modification prompt.
The modification prompt describes what should appear or happen in the selected region – and should include continuity language when the change needs to blend with the surrounding clip ("seamlessly blending with surrounding scene," "maintaining consistent lighting with the rest of the frame"). A clear, specific description of the desired change produces better results than vague direction.
Use cases for Modify Region.
Practical use cases: removing an unwanted element from a background area, changing the appearance of a specific object in the scene, adding a new element to a specific area of the frame, or changing environmental details in one region while keeping the rest of the clip intact.
