Text-to-Video Prompting in Pika

Lesson 3: Building a Personal Prompt Library

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Create a structured format for saving effective prompts
  • Develop prompt templates from successful generations
  • Organize a prompt library for efficient retrieval
  • Update and maintain a prompt library over time

Lesson Content

Why maintain a prompt library.

Effective prompts are creative assets. Reconstructing a prompt from memory that produced excellent results is unreliable – documenting successful prompts with the generated result and any relevant notes creates a growing production resource that compounds over time, with each project adding to the library's utility.

Prompt library entry structure.

A useful entry includes: the full prompt text, the visual target it was addressing, any key observations (which specific element made the biggest difference, what variations were tried), and a reference to the generated clip. Even a simple text document with this information is more useful than relying on memory or platform history alone.

Developing prompt templates.

When a prompt produces excellent results and the core structure is generalizable, extract a template: "[subject], [environment], [motion descriptor], [aesthetic], [mood descriptor]" – with the successful fixed elements preserved and the subject-specific parts made variable. This template can be applied to different subjects to produce visually consistent series.

Maintaining the library.

Periodically review the library to remove or update entries that no longer reflect current platform behavior (Pika's model updates can change how prompts perform), and to note new discoveries from recent projects. A library that isn't maintained becomes stale reference material rather than active creative resource.
