Text-to-Video Prompting in Pika

Lesson 2: Iterative Prompting in Pika

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Evaluate a Pika generation against an intended target
  • Identify which prompt element to adjust based on the evaluation
  • Apply one-variable-at-a-time iteration effectively
  • Know when to pivot to a different prompt approach

Lesson Content

Evaluating Pika output.

Evaluate each generation specifically against the intended visual and emotional target – not just whether it looks interesting generally. Ask: does the subject match? Does the motion feel right? Does the aesthetic/mood match the intended feeling? Does the clip have the right energy level? Specific evaluation drives specific prompt adjustments.

One-variable iteration.

Changing one element at a time between iterations allows attributing output differences to specific prompt changes – building a working understanding of how Pika responds to specific descriptors. Changing multiple elements simultaneously makes it harder to understand what drove what difference.

Pivoting when iteration plateaus.

After 3-4 iterations without meaningful progress toward the target, consider a fundamentally different approach – different framing of the scene, different subject description, or a different aesthetic category. Continued refinement of a prompt that has plateaued typically doesn't break through; a fresh frame often does.

Recording effective patterns.

When an iteration produces a notably better result, note which specific change drove the improvement – this builds pattern knowledge about what prompt elements are particularly effective in Pika for specific visual targets, which informs future prompting more efficiently than relearning from scratch each time.
