Advanced Prompt Engineering
Lesson 3: The -no Parameter and Precision Strategies
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Use –no to explicitly exclude specific visual concepts
- Apply precision engineering strategies for complex requirements
- Combine –no with positive prompt and weighting for full control
- Document advanced prompt structures for team and cross-session use
Lesson Content
The –no parameter.
--no [concept] instructs Midjourney to avoid the specified concept in the generation. Multiple exclusions: --no text, people, watermark. Useful for: removing persistent unwanted defaults (characters appearing when only a landscape was prompted), excluding text or watermarks from generated images, removing specific visual elements that keep appearing despite not being included in the positive prompt.
Precision engineering strategies.
Precision engineering for complex requirements: (1) Layer prompt construction – build from subject outward to environment, style, mood, then camera; (2) Use specific rather than vague descriptors – "Hasselblad medium format portrait photography" vs. "professional photo"; (3) Separate complex multi-element scenes with :: syntax; (4) Add –no exclusions for common unwanted defaults; (5) Specify parameters last (aspect ratio, stylize, quality).
Combining all controls.
Full-control prompt structure: [Subject :: weight] [Environment :: weight] [Style and mood descriptors] [Camera and framing] [Quality modifiers] --no [exclusions] --ar [ratio] --s [stylize] --q [quality] --v [version]. Not every prompt needs all elements – include what's relevant for the specific generation requirement.
Documentation for advanced prompt structures.
Complex multi-element prompts with weighting, exclusions, and specific parameters are difficult to reconstruct from memory – document them during development. Documentation includes: the working prompt, the parameters used, what it was for, what worked and what didn't in iteration, and the final selected generation. This institutional knowledge is the foundation for advanced production efficiency.
