Lesson 3: Model Versions and Specialty Parameters
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Select the appropriate model version for a specific use case
- Use the –tile parameter for seamless repeating pattern generation
- Apply the –seed parameter for result reproducibility
- Understand when to use Niji mode for anime-style generation
Lesson Content
Model version selection.
Midjourney releases model versions with different aesthetic characteristics – newer versions are not always better for all use cases. Older model versions may produce more suitable aesthetics for certain historical styles or visual treatments. Use --v [version number] to specify a model version. Verify the currently available versions at docs.midjourney.com – model availability varies by subscription tier and time.
The –tile parameter.
--tile generates seamless tileable images – when repeated side by side, the edges match without visible seam. Useful for: background textures, surface patterns, fabric patterns, wallpaper designs, and any repeating visual content. Tile images require no additional modification to repeat seamlessly.
The –seed parameter.
--seed [number] specifies the starting random seed for generation – using the same seed with the same prompt on the same model version produces highly similar (though not always identical) results. Useful for: reproducing a generation result across sessions, sharing reproducible results with collaborators, and controlled A/B testing of prompt variations from the same starting point.
Niji mode for anime and illustration styles.
Niji mode (--niji [version] or selecting the Niji model in settings) is Midjourney's model specialized for anime and illustration-style output. It produces significantly more anime-appropriate output than the standard model with anime style descriptors – useful for any content targeting anime, manga, or specific illustration styles that align with the Niji model's training.
