Parameters and Technical Controls
Lesson 2: Stylize, Chaos, and Quality Parameters
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Use the –stylize parameter to control aesthetic interpretation strength
- Apply the –chaos parameter to adjust variation between generated results
- Use –quality settings for efficiency or quality balance
- Understand how these parameters interact with each other and with prompt text
Lesson Content
The –stylize parameter.
--stylize (or --s) controls how strongly Midjourney applies its aesthetic interpretation to the prompt. Low values (--s 0 to --s 100) produce images closely matched to the literal prompt with minimal aesthetic interpretation. High values (--s 500 to --s 1000) produce highly aesthetic, visually stylized interpretations that may deviate from the literal prompt in favor of visual beauty. Default is --s 100. Adjust based on whether prompt literalness or aesthetic quality is more important for the use case.
The –chaos parameter.
--chaos (or --c) controls how different the four images in a generation grid are from each other. Low values (--c 0 to --c 10) produce four similar variations. High values (--c 50 to --c 100) produce four dramatically different interpretations of the same prompt. High chaos is useful for creative exploration when you want diverse visual interpretations; low chaos is useful for production when you want consistent, predictable output.
The –quality parameter.
--quality (or --q) controls the time (and GPU cost) spent generating an image. --q .25 generates quickly at lower detail; --q 1 (default) is standard quality; --q 2 doubles generation time for higher detail. Higher quality values increase GPU time consumption – useful for final production images where maximum detail is required.
Parameter interaction.
Parameters interact: high --stylize with high --chaos produces dramatically varied and highly aesthetic interpretations – useful for exploring what Midjourney might do with a concept; low --stylize with low --chaos produces consistent, literal interpretations – useful for controlled production work with predictable results.
