Prompt Fundamentals for Image Generation

Lesson 2: High-Impact Prompt Elements

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Identify the highest-impact prompt elements for visual output
  • Use art style and medium descriptors effectively
  • Apply lighting and atmosphere descriptors for visual impact
  • Understand the role of quality modifiers in final output

Lesson Content

Art style and medium – highest impact.

Art style and medium descriptors have the highest impact on overall visual character: "oil painting," "watercolor," "digital illustration," "photography," "pencil sketch," "3D render," "anime," "comic book art," "impressionist painting." These fundamentally change the visual treatment and often override other aesthetic descriptors. Include the intended style explicitly – don't leave it to default.

Lighting descriptors – second highest impact.

Lighting transforms the same subject dramatically: "golden hour," "soft studio lighting," "dramatic side lighting," "harsh midday sun," "candlelight," "neon glow," "moonlight," "volumetric fog," "god rays." Light quality, direction, and color temperature all influence the emotional quality and visual drama of the generated image significantly.

Subject specificity – precision over vagueness.

Subject description impacts recognition and rendering accuracy – "a person" produces varied interpretations; "a person in their 30s with silver hair, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, standing confidently" produces much more consistent and intentional subject rendering.

Quality modifiers – influence on detail and finish.

Quality descriptors influence the visual finish: "highly detailed," "ultra-realistic," "masterpiece quality," "concept art," "professional photography," "8K resolution." These descriptors nudge the model toward higher detail and finish quality. Note that quality modifiers are supplementary – they don't substitute for strong style and subject direction.
